What is the BMHS?
What is the BMHS?

MH Apollo Champion at HOYS 2005 Registrations after 1st April 2007

  1. Only horses with two BMHS registered parents may automatically be registered in the BMHS Stud Book. If the stallion is not licensed, its offspring is only eligible for entry on a side register and may not be shown or bred from.
  2. All applications must comply with our registration procedures in full. We do not necessarily 'overstamp' registrations from other societies, but require verification of all breeding information.
  3. Three year and over mares of any breeding can be registered on the
Breeding only register. Vetting for soundness is required.
  4. Other horses may be eligible to be hardshipped onto the Stud Book, after assessment. Full requirements can be obtained from the office.

We will continue to provide a 'passport only' service, but our passports are for DEFRA purposes only and do not include Stud Book registration.

For either registration or passport, only verified parentage can be included. Proof of parentage can either be by the mating being correctly recorded on a stallion breeding report or by DNA testing.

A horse that has only a passport cannot be shown and if mated, even with a BMHS registered horse, cannot have its offspring registered. It is intended only to provide the basic legal requirements for an animal that you would consider not suitable for registration as a miniature horse, and are intending to keep or pass on only as a pet.

Even the most well planned breeding program can produce such an animal, but please note that we will be making it clear that animals without a registration certificate are not considered suitable for breeding miniature horses.

Our new registration certificates include as much information about the breeding of an animal as we know. In time we should be able to produce six generation pedigrees showing origins and/or primary registrations. We hope that this will be an aid in the selection of breeding stock and the general improvement of our breed.
